Acts 16:13-40; Philippians 1:1-5 - “Real People In Real Places”

  1. Think about the advances in communication technology over the past decades and especially in recent years.  Do you agree with the idea that more “high tech” communication has replaced “high touch”?  How does Paul’s introduction to his letter to the Philippians highlight the deep relational connection between Paul and those in Philippi?  What stands out to you?
  2. Philippi was a real place in ancient history.  Located on a major east-west highway in the Roman Empire, Philippi was composed of a diverse society.  Read Acts 16:13-40 again and make some observation on the diversity in the stories of the people recorded by Luke.
  3. Ithaca is a diverse city as well.  Make similar observations of the diverse population as you go through each day.  How can the gospel of Christ make inroads in this diverse setting?
  4. Paul is exceeding grateful for his relational connection with the people (verse 5). Study those named in the letter: Epaphroditus (2:25-30), Euodia, Syntche, and Clement (4:2, 3).  What were the strengths and weaknesses of these “saints”?  Why are the “saints” connected with the overseers and deacons in the greetings?
  5. Institutionalism and over-spiritualization are two temptations that constantly face the church in every century.  What happens to an outward vision when management of the organization and preservation of the status quo becomes the main focus of the church?  What happens when there is a glorified image of the church that leads to great disappointment with the people who are part the church?  How does Paul encourage us at BG as he writes to the Philippians?
  6. Partnerships in Gospel ministry are essential to the life of any local church.  Why should these partnerships be Gospel-centered (verse 5)?  How can personal partnerships be developed with other believers?  Why is it important to provide material resources for those in need (2 Corinthians 8:1-7) through a partnership connection?
  7. As we look to the future, the Global Missions Committee and the Elders of BG are talking about developing partnerships with God’s people in Uganda.  What does this relationship between Paul and the Philippians have to teach us?
  8. The Lord Jesus calls for an active commitment on the part of God’s people to be “real” people in a “real” place. How can you respond to His call this week?

Ask the Lord to use this meditation of His Word to increase our love for Him and for each other as we seek to live daily by the grace of God.
