Breaking Bread: A Basic Discipleship Method

Jesus frequently broke bread with his followers, both the disciples and the thousands of others he was teaching. The most recognizable instance is The Last Supper, which we can read in all four Gospels. This instance is joined by Jesus feeding with the five thousand and four thousand in Matthew 14 and 15 respectively, eating with sinners and tax collectors at Matthew’s house in Matthew 9, eating with Simon the Pharisee in Luke 7, and the list can go on.

In each instance, our Lord provides powerful teaching and instruction to his followers out of the dinner conversation as well as a beautiful example of discipleship to the Bible reader of today. Combined with my heart for the growth and discipleship of Christian men, I take Christ’s example and coordinate a men’s breakfast for the men of BG and the surrounding community.

Offered on a Saturday morning in the even months of the year (minus December), the time is generally unstructured to allow for the Lord to work through conversation and to provide a low-level entry into the church community for any attendees who may not regularly attend BG or any church.

The men’s breakfast has been a time filled with discussions that have gone deeper into recent sermon topics, have fueled the church Discipleship Committee and the pending formation of Trail Life at BG (a boys’ and men’s ministry, see www.bgtraillife.com for more information), and fostered general fellowship among the men at BG. The meal itself includes common breakfast staples like scrambled eggs and cheesy hashbrowns but also lighter fare like yogurt and granola.

Be sure to check the church calendar for dates and look for announcements leading up to the next breakfast, set for April 5 at 9am. All men and boys are welcome! For more information, connect with Shaun Gendrue (gendruesm1@gmail.com).
