Nature Camp: Survival Basics

Imagine a group of children in the woods, gently tending a small fire. While it burns, their teacher retells a story about Jesus in the wilderness—some eyes are on her, some remain fixed on the fire. After a time, the group carefully tends the fire to ashes, extinguishing the flames.

A bit further away, you can see another group making small huts out of leaves and sticks. They test their shelters by pouring on a bucket of water, and laugh at the outcome—water trickling all over the place.

In another corner of the woods, a group is playing a stealthy game, sneaking up on their blindfolded teacher. Senses are heightened, everyone listening for the rustle of a leaf under their bare feed.

BG Nature Camp is an outdoor-based summer program that uses tools of wilderness skills and nature immersion to communicate the truth of the Gospel.

Our theme this year is survival basics. We’ll explore how to supply our needs in nature for shelter, water, fire, and food. We’ll play games to hone these skills. Woven throughout, we will encounter the ways that Jesus meets our deepest needs: love, grace, and salvation. The natural world provides the perfect backdrop for sharing this wonderful story together.

Nature Camp will be Monday through Thursday, July 13-16. We will offer a morning camp from 9 am to 12 pm, and an extended day option to 3pm. This program is free of charge for children entering Kindergarten through 6th grade. Campers will gather in the morning to hear the day’s story, then break into age-groups to practice nature skills in BG’s beautiful woods beyond the playground.

In order to weave this program together, we need many teachers, helpers, and others to support logistics. We will hold a volunteer training morning on July 11th to equip teachers with games and activities for their groups. We welcome both adults and teens. No matter your comfort level or experience, there are many ways to support this program!

Please join us in praying for the children and families that will be impacted by Nature Camp, and consider how you might be involved. Email heidi@bg.org to learn more. Camper registration will open April 1st.

We’ll see you in the woods!
